Sadler’s Wells

What we did for Sadler’s Wells

Summer 2012 was a fantastic time, and being in the heart of central London, we were immensely proud to be part of the London 2012 Festival.

One of the many publications we designed, printed and produced for participating partners of the London 2012 Festival was our programme for the first ever Sadler's Wells and Barbican co-production: Tanztheater Wuppertal Pina Bausch – World Cities 2012. Bringing the company of one of the most influential and best-loved choreographers to London, World Cities was the last project that Pina Bausch planned before her death in 2009.  Her vision was to bring together ten collaborations, from and themed by ten cities from around the globe.

We were tasked with designing a programme that would not only give clarity and portray the structure of the production, but display the eclectic beauty and vibrant colour of her vision. Designed around a bespoke flexible 10/12-column grid, the perfect-bound programme allowed large-format production photography and clarity to dominate the aesthetic.

Being inspired by the various cities, it seemed appropriate to use Hoefler & Frere-Jones’ ever-popular Gotham family typeface, that was also inspired by the city. (It also just happens to be our house typeface too.)

Both the producers and we were very proud of the final programme, with the Tanztheater Wuppertal company adding that the design was ‘really beautiful’. You can judge yourself from these images but, as ever, we were honoured to be involved in a project with so many talented people and to be part of the social and cultural triumph that was the London 2012 Festival.
